In Memoriam

John AK Muir

It is with sadness that we record the passing of John Muir, a staunch supporter of the Simon van der Stel Foundation and Chairman from 1999 to 2011f

John was a fount of information on the Cape and its history and always generous with sharing his knowledge, leading walks and giving illustrated talks on topics such as the Hotels of Cape Town, the Memorials of the Cape, Cinemas and Breweries and, of course, writing his three books. The last being Walking Cape Town which he compiled in conjunction with his late wife Linda, who took many of the photographs.

John also chaired the Conservator Trust and gave wise counsel on financial matters and how best to distribute grants for various projects and publications.

John was a Councillor for the City of Cape Town from 1978 to 1996, Chairman of City Council Planning Committee for 4 years and Chairman of the Executive Committee of City Council for 4 years where his functions included Town Planning issues. He served on the Council of the University of Cape Town (10 years) and on the Board of National Botanic Institute (Kirstenbosch 8 years).
He was an Executive committee member of Constantia Property Owners Association and active
in co-ordinating the proposal for the declaration of Constantia Valley as a Provincial Heritage area
(with the late Professor Fabio Todeschini and others).

John was the Managing Director of The Land Trust Group of Property Companies until his retirement
in April 2006, thereafter a Director of Joyce & McGregor Group of property companies.

He will be much missed by is fellow committee members and all within the Foundation.
