A powerful message from a Bo-Kaap activist.

“Bo-Kaap is heritage enough for them to send tourists here to look at pretty colorful houses but not heritage enough for them to take the locals into consideration when making changes which affect us all

City of Cape Town has been selling the land in Bo-Kaap to big developers & overseas investors who are putting up big buildings and turning our homes and heritage into nothing but money making hubs without any consideration for the locals who were born and raised here. They’ve made the land so expensive that it’s impossible for the residents to even consider buying, and trust me, offers have been made!
The recent change in the area has directly affected me and my family and so many others from the area, but does the city care? No! Bo-Kaap is heritage enough for them to send tourists here to look at pretty colorful houses but not heritage enough for them to take the locals into consideration when making changes which affect us all!
I’ve lived in Bo-Kaap my entire life & so has my mother, my granny, great grandparents and so many other family members… I for one, am tired! I’m tired of the city using us to make money but not looking after the heritage that my people have taken decades to build!
My name is Shakirah Dramat, I’m 24 years old and I will not be silenced! Land is for the people, not for profit!
